Parents' Stories

While every case is different, these stories remind us that behind every legal proceeding is a family whose life has been profoundly affected.

Like many parents facing international parental child abduction, my journey began with the devastating realization that my children were gone. A custody order that I believed would protect them did not automatically secure their return once they crossed international borders. Suddenly, I was faced with navigating a foreign country, unfamiliar laws, a different culture, and a complex legal system while fighting to bring my children home. The journey brought uncertainty, isolation, court battles, concealment, alienation, and reunification challenges that I never imagined I would have to face. After two years of perseverance and advocacy, my children returned to me. That moment felt like life had been given back. It reminded me that even when circumstances seem impossible, hope remains and justice can prevail.. My experience transformed my pain into purpose. Today, I use what I learned through my own journey to support other parents and families facing international parental child abduction, helping them navigate their challenges, reconnect with their children, and hold on to hope for resolution. -Founder

A mother of three young children experienced the unimaginable when her children were wrongfully taken abroad by their father. Because the country they were taken to is not a signatory to the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, recovering her children became an extraordinarily complex legal challenge. Believing she and her children were travelling for a family visit, she never imagined to wake up the following morning to find that the father has taken the children, their travel documents as well as her passport and fled the country on a plane. Over the next two years, she pursued legal proceedings, where she obtained sole custody of her three children, a divorce judgment, and other legal protections. She then faced the daunting task of seeking recognition and enforcement of those orders while navigating a foreign legal system. When the legal support she had relied upon betrayed her, she continued the fight, advocating tirelessly for her children’s safe return. Throughout this difficult journey, we stood beside her, providing guidance and support as she pursued justice for her family. After years of perseverance and determination, she succeeded in bringing her three children safely back to Canada. Her journey reflects the extraordinary resilience of parents who refuse to give up on their children. It also highlights the critical importance of legal advocacy, informed support, and international cooperation when responding to cases of international parental child abduction.

A Parent Navigating the Hague Process

The past year and a half has been the most devastating of my life. Being forcibly separated from my young child, who was wrongfully retained by his mother abroad after a family vacation, has caused a pain I never imagined a parent could endure. Every day without him feels like stolen time—moments I was never able to share and memories I was never able to create.

I was reassured that my son was in a Hague Convention signatory country, offering a possible avenue for his return. But navigating the Hague process during this emotional turmoil has been extremely challenging, both emotionally and financially. Even months after obtaining a return judgment, enforcing it has been a separate struggle, and I have lost all contact with my son, with no clarity about his whereabouts.

Throughout this ordeal, Shine a Light Network has been invaluable. Their support shines a light into an incredibly dark place, giving hope to parents in unimaginable circumstances. Together, we worked through strategy, identified possible next steps, and they advocated for my case to help me obtain the assistance I needed to move forward. Having the organization by my side—people who understand my pain and have faced similar challenges—has given me clarity, direction, and, most of all, hope.
